10 Tips for a Stronger Nose

by: Dr. Ziad El-Desoki "The Founder of Perfumer Archive"     |     Updated: May 23rd, 2025

Waking up with a blocked nose, unable to smell or breathe properly,
Then,
your nose starts to open up and run, while tissues become your best friend.

This is what many perfumers face daily,

until they start following some simple tips to keep their upper respiratory system healthy.

These practices help them work efficiently and live a normal day.

In this article, I’ll share some proven daily habits to help you do the same. 👇

1. Air purifier:

They are great at reducing dust and odors in your room, which will give your nose time to relax.

2. Don't smell a lot in one day:

Working out in the gym for 1 hour will build your muscles, but working out for 4 hours will destroy them, the same with for your nose.

3. Reduce perfume/perfumed product usage:

Try to avoid using fragrances outside the lab as much as possible. Your nose needs rest and recovery to avoid getting tired.
Use fragrance-free products, and most days, deodorant is enough, unless you're testing your new creations or a client's sample

4. Sleep ScentLess:

Avoid storing fragrances or raw materials in the room where you sleep. It is essential to rest and allow your brain to unwind without distractions.

5. Daily dose of vitamin C:

As a doctor, I suggest taking vitamin C supplements or increasing your intake of lemonade. These measures can help strengthen your small nasal blood vessels, potentially leading to improved nasal health and function.

6. Dilute strong materials:

Avoid smelling undiluted strong materials, such as birch tar oil, acetoin, diacetyl, cis-3-hexanol, aldehyde C9, and others.
It is better to smell these powerful materials at 10% or 1% dilutions.

7. Clean your nose, flush gently! (THE BIG SECRET) :

Clean your nose after smelling sessions using a nasal flush (hypertonic seawater solutions).
Be careful and spray it from a distance or use a gentle jet to avoid hurting your inner nasal mucous membranes.

8. Don't smell directly from the bottle:

Smell on blotters.
One day, at the beginning of my journey, I spent about 6 hours smelling 150 materials directly from the bottles.
I ended up with severe nasal congestion and lost my sense of smell (anosmia) for two weeks.

9. Doctor check-up:

A general check-up twice a year is a good habit to notice any potential problems early

10. Massage your sinuses:
